1 Month at Lycee Saint Joseph and in France!

Today marks 31 full days in France...wow!

My exchange so far has been great, I love it here. The beautiful region where I live, my host family, school-locals.. life in France .Everyday I grow more grateful for all of the experiences I counter from everyday situations, at home or at school. Sometimes I still think to myself, I'm really here! It's a unrealistic feeling living a normal life in a country across the world, but it's also an extraordinary moment.

In my one month here I have learned a lot already but not just about the culture and language. My 2nd suitcase containing all of my clothing expect shoes and jackets (thank god), only arrived last Tuesday (22/09). I went basically 1 month without my clothes! Although its not as hard as you'd think, I really made peace with the fact that it was missing, I only started stressing towards the 3rd week because I had come to realize that if it was missing I had to get ready in the documentation field, to prove that all contents were there... dealing with airlines is not fun. I also started to miss my clothes, it's starting to get cold, I wanted more pants, long sleeves and well what belonged to me. On the bright side I got some compensation money! It's funny how good it felt just to see some old clothes again. I'm super lucky that my host mom helped me so much, with lending and buying clothes- she's the reason why I was in such good hands. Some other difficulties have been spiders, waking up early and minor issue in the beginning was school.

I wake up everyday around 6am in order to be ready for the mini bus that comes at 6:45am. This bus comes to pick the students from their house to take them to the bigger bus, in Villenueve. There's usually no more than 6 of us, it's all the students just in this area. I live in Septfonds which only 4km from Villenueve, in total i'm 15km away from my school Lycee Saint Joseph in Villefranche de Rouergue. The bus from Villenueve leaves at 7:05am and we usually arrive in Villefranche de R. around 7:20am BUT school doesn't not start until 8am, and on Mondays at 9! Despite the wait, I love my mornings; It's one of my favorite parts of the day. Sitting at the Notre Dame Place, eating a croissant or sitting in a cafe... love it! A normal day at school goes from 8:00am -5:30pm.. The bus only leaves at 6:05 pm from Villefranche de Rourgue, so I'm usually not home until 6:45pm- 12 hours of day! I'm lucky on Wednesday's school finishes at 12pm!!!!

Current Time Table

School has definitely changed since the first week, I like it a lot more! In the beginning it was hard... language barrier, younger students, different learning methods/subjects, and just in general. With time everything has improved. Everything is something new and I'm slowly starting to adjust. My French has improved dramatically since I've arrived, in the language department I'm succeeding rather well! My comprehension is great but I need to work on my pronunciation and grammar , chaque chose en son temps. I really feel myself starting to immerse in the culture and language- I find myself having full conversation with peers and I don't struggle with language when I'm by myself!

Waking down into School

Foyer, Room for students to hang out.. especially when it is cold!

Office(s), more classrroms

Library, and classrooms

Garden Area with Science Classrooms and Gym around the corner

Recreation Area

That's Saint Joseph!! A high school, middle school and hotel school!! I go to the high school but as you saw above on my time table I actually have to classes with "5eme" which is equivalent to Grade 7's. I just changed my whole time table and classrooms for my own benefit. In my my first class that I was in for the first 3 weeks, 2A; I was together with 2 other exchange students. Justin from U.S.A and Paddy from Ireland, this was good because all of us had someone to talk to and express mutual feelings but this was not good for the improvement of the French language or culture. I felt like it was necessary for me to do something about it! There's a lady that plans out all of the timetables for students and teachers and more! She's awesome and very kind, she resolved all of the issues with me and the other exchange students! Now i'm in 2B and have German and French with grade 7's, it's definitely a challenging experience... On the first day it was rather funny than strange borrowing notes from a 12 year old or having them assist you through all class...! I'm slowly getting to know bit by bits of the school, I look forward to after Christmas where I may move up to my own grade and maybe even terminale which is equivalent to Grade 12, there I get to help with English Literature!! I'm excited about spending my year at Saint Joseph, I am even proud to say that I have made some friends to hang out during lunch, day by day things are getting easier!

In theory everything is wonderful, my host family, school, and life! I'm really looking forward to the next 3 weekends! Next I may visit Najac, area close by with a beautiful castle. October 9-11 is the 2nd Rotex, the following weekend my host family and are going on a little road trip to Italy!

C'est la vie, c'est mon vie francaise.

Tout a 'heure!

Another Great Weekend (Sept 12 & 13)

Everything about this weekend was awesome! We were suppose to originally leave Friday after work/school but the weather was so bad we didn't end up going! Although we weren't going to miss the "Coxinelle Meeting" so we just planned to leave in the morning, probably early.

Sept 12

I got up early and had all my things ready but the weather was still bad, so we ended up leaving later in the afternoon. We arrived in Meze, Saturday evening, not our final destination but an awesome pit stop. We all enjoyed a panini while watching some live Water Jousting!

After we headed to where we were sleeping. Sète. Another beautiful city on the coast of Mediterranean!

In Sète, we out went to dinner to Le Grand Bleu, a seafood restaurant. If you know me well, you know I don`t really like seafood but this year I`m willing to accept it more! I ate for the first time, a large quantity of sea food and didn`t puke after!I ate cooked mussels, seashell, fish and some potates, this dish was ``Salade du Pecher``, for my main course I ate ``St.Jaques``, this is scallops prepared in butter and served in a scalloped shell but what I had was in a delicious creamy dish along witth some pasta!

Sept 13

Sète

We said bye to Sete sunday morning to Cap D`age, where the Car Venue was. Looking at the map it felt like it would take us some time to get there but from Meze to Sete to C`adge were quick car rides.

At the Car venue ``Meeting du Coxinelle``, I met my host dad`s brother and his friend. We all enjoyed this special event. I loved every minute of it. I found it incredible how many people showed up from even Denmark.., and how the quantity of old refurbished cars, that were taken care of so well

After we ate lunch at this awesome place at the beach and headed home! It was such a fantastic weekend, unquestionably one to remember! Special thank you to my host parents for making this trip happen and letting me be a part of it.

Bonne Journée a tous!

Belcastel et des chevaux

Bonjouur!

Good but.. busy weekend! My host family and I went to visit one of the the prettiest villages in France, "Un plus beau village du France". Belcastel was truly amazing but what I loved the most was seeing those antique cars! Both my host dad, David and mom, Sandra are big fans of not only antique cars but in particularly the Beetle Volkswagen, which I also adore! The first time I drove a car was a Beetle, they're a lot of fun. Not only do my host parents like them so do my host grand-parents, which are also my second family! Sandra's father displayed his very own  "Deux Chevaux" this weekend, he has a 1957, completely refurbished!!! It was all really interesting and a joy to be a part of the same liking. I looking forward to this upcoming weekend, we are going to South of France, Montpellier and around that area. We are going to another venue/convention of Volkswagen cars such as Beetle's, Buggy's and the vans! I'm super excited not only about the cars but about going to see a little bit a South of France.

Then on Sunday, there was a bit of a Rotary get together just between the other exchange student, Justin and my counselor, Thierry and his wife, Laurence. Thierry has a beautiful house up in Lunac which is about 25 minutes from Villefranche but another 20 minutes from where I live. It was "far" but totally worth the drive. It was a wonderful lunch to just talk about everything and all get to know each other better!

First Rotex (Aug 28-Aug 30)

Salut! I'm sorry for my disappearance, I have not had WiFi since I returned from my Rotary Inbound & Rebound weekend! This is the post I wrote:

Yesterday I returned from " Le Lac Chambon "! This is where Rotary District 1740 held its first rotex for the exchange year 2015-2016. In this rotex there was all the inbounds (students on exchange) and returning rebounds (students back from exchange). I finally got to meet everyone that is on Rotary exchange around me!! It was awesome, not only did I get to meet lot of new friends, Rotary being amazing as it is planned out some activities such as visiting a castle!

C A N A D A !
I left friday morning at 7:15 AM from my house to get to Villefranche de R. to meet Justin, the other exchange student and his host mom along with Laurence- my counselor's wife. Laurence drove me and Justin to Montepellier to meet her husband and daughter. That was not on route to get to Lake Chambon but we had to meet up with them and go to their daughter's apartment to drop her off. When we met we all went for lunch... to McDonalds! McDonald's in France is different... it's a lot more advanced in many ways and the food I have to admit was better and there was lot more options and variations.

After the stop at their daughter's apartment we were on route but far away from Lake Chambon. In total it took us about 10 hours or so to get there but it's actually only about 3-4 hours from where my host city is.

The weekend consisted of constant chatting and activities. The first day was everyone introducing themselves and getting organized. Second day we went had 3 orientations, paddle boating and on a quest to retrieve flags, talent show and lots of pictures! On the final day we got together to talk about Rotary and the upcoming Rotex, Bus trips, etc- then onto Chateau de Murol... Then HOME!

It was an awesome weekend and I already miss it. I hope all the other exchange students the best with their exchange year. I'm excited for the next get together to come. Thank you Rotary for making this all possible. :)
